Gota is basically gold and silver lace from Lucknow. This metallic lace is made up of metal-coated weft yarn, while the warp is silk. This combination of metallic thread with silk gives it its name.
Gota Patti’s work has a long history in India, dating back to the medieval era when people used it to decorate their clothes and other cloth items. The artistry that goes into this type of work was recognized by the Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan who employed people exclusively for this purpose at his palace in Agra. In 2018, Gota Patti’s work has also been recognized as a craft by UNESCO where it was listed among the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity
